WHAT IS TOLE AND DECORATIVE PAINTING
Tole Painting is the folk art of decorative painting. Tole comes from the French, meaning lacquered or enameled metal-ware, often gilded. It also means a table or board.
Contemporary Decorative Painting is a broad category that encompasses numerous painting techniques and mediums applied to a variety of surfaces. It is a teachable art form that anyone can learn because of the systematic methods that are employed. The use of either patterns or free-hand designs allows a high degree of success without academic training or drawing ability. The scope of decorative painting is boundless; incorporating styles and techniques of the past, adapting these to the trends and materials of the present.
Today’s expression of decorative painting includes a variety of design and type styles including realistic fruit and flowers, still life painting, as well as a variety of folk art and stroke painting. The field equally encompasses landscape painting, fabric painting, watercolor, painting with enamels and colored pencils. |

OUR CHAPTER |
|
We think our chapter is the greatest! We welcome all new members and you will start on an exciting journey as you join our chapter. All members receive: ¯ Our annual Directory / Calendar, which includes our meetings, activities and seminar dates. It also contains a complete list of members and our Constitution, By-laws, and Standing Rules. ¯ A name badge with instructions for painting. ¯ A newsletter on-line or mailed to you. The newsletter will keep you informed of current information about the activities of the chapter. ¯ The Decorative Painter, a wonderful painting magazine issued from the Society of Decorative Painters, which comes four (4) times a year. (You must belong to SDP to join Tulsa Town Tolers.) Our monthly meetings include a time for business, an inspiration, a quarter table drawing, a program (mostly painting workshops) and often a door prize drawing. Our meetings begin in February and in March we have an egg exchange where you bring a lovely painted egg which we exchange, and then we are off to our annual retreat in April which is a great painting get-a-way for a couple of days. The rest of monthly meetings include a basket auction, Membership Appreciation Day and lots of painting workshops. We also do an exchange in October with pumpkins and in November with Christmas ornaments. We have a library that is stocked with pattern packets and DVDs for loan to our members. We have two seminars each year, usually one in acrylics and one in oils, with nationally known teachers. These seminars are very popular and give us a good chance to broaden our painting knowledge. We have several service projects planned for this year including painting cards for our Veterans in the local hospitals and to support the Little Lighthouse organization with their annual fundraiser. We end our year with an annual Christmas Party and Auction, which is our main fundraiser for the year. The Christmas Party is full of good cheer and a wonderful time of fellowship and great shopping.
